Are you #EURefReady?

Today (at midnight) is the last day to register to vote for the 2016 EU referendum – have you registered?

Can I vote?

The referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union is on Thursday 23 June 2016.

If you are not already on the electoral roll, you need to register to vote by midnight tonight, 7 June to vote in the EU Referendum.

You can vote in this referendum if you are registered to vote in the UK, are 18 or over on 23 June 2016 and are:

  • A British or Irish citizen living in the UK, or
  • A Commonwealth citizen living in the UK who has leave to remain in the UK or who does not require leave to remain in the UK, or
  • A British citizen living overseas who has been registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years, or
  • An Irish citizen living overseas who was born in Northern Ireland and who has been registered to vote in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years.

If you are an EU citizen you are not eligible to vote in the EU Referendum, unless you meet the criteria above.

If you are not sure whether you are registered to vote, you should contact your local electoral registration office. They will be able to let you know. You can find their contact details by entering your postcode below.

How can I vote?

There are three ways you can vote – in person on polling day, by post or by proxy (somebody you trust voting on your behalf).

If you are not already on the electoral roll, you need to register to vote by midnight tonight, 7 June to vote in the EU Referendum.

  1. In person  at a polling station on Thursday 23rd June. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.
  2. By post – you must apply to vote by post before 5pm on 8 June 2016.
Download a postal application form here (PDF)
  3. By proxy – this allows somebody you trust to vote on your behalf and you will need to state how you want them to vote for you and why you cannot vote in person. You will need to apply by 5pm on the 15 June 2016 to vote by proxy.
